Hanson is an abstract painter, printmaker and photographer. His work addresses a respectful exploration of man’s association with nature. Hanson draws much of his inspiration and images from observing the marks, textures and patinas of natural forms. he is interested in the impact of time and forces on the landscape. What is revealed in his work is often a conscious and/or unconscious reaction to place.
Themes of history and fragility permeate Hanson’s art. In his photography-based work, his subjects are often presented as having a hidden history or story. Small marks revealed in physical layers of the work often create a damaged beauty in the image. Unpredictability and experimentation are integral to the work – often giving it a raw and primitive quality.
